After birth, the cutting of umbilical cord is symbolic of a new, an independent life. This procedure may endanger the infant’s survival, unless it is carefully carried out under clean conditions. Trying to teach this at the moment of excitement of new birth, when so much is going on, is difficult.

This simple model should allow students to carry out the tying and learning where to cut many times before they undertake it in reality. We designed this model for Traditional Birth Attendants but may be useful for others. However you can use this information to teach in schools, in those societies where family members are involved in the birthing process. You will also find in this pack, breast feeding in the first hour.
