HIV AIDS Action Reader: My Sister Julie

HIV / AIDS Action Readers aim to promote good health practice through extensive reading. Therefore this important series of readers is designed to help young people to develop the knowledge, attitudes, self-esteem. As well as skills they need to manage relationships safely and happily. So they can cope better with the crisis of HIV and AIDS which is affecting all our communities today. The stories are affirming and empowering for young readers as they portray a variety of strong, believable characters. Those characters are finding ways to make choices in adversity and take control of their lives. You can use HIV / AIDS Action Readers across the curriculum. For example in literacy, social studies, life skills and science classes as well as in after-school or community clubs.

Levels, the readers are at three levels. Each level provides reading development and language control. Level 1 includes simple stories which encourage good relationships, help children to cope with living in communities with HIV and AIDS and prepare children to protect themselves and understand how their bodies fight disease. Levels 2 and 3 are stories or factual readers about different aspects of HIV and AIDS and include additional factual information and activities

Suki misses her mother and doesn’t like her older sister being in charge. She finds it hard to understand how and why their lives have changed since their mother died. But when Suki gets lost, she begins to understand how important her sister is to her and how they need to help each other.
