Low Cost Water Source ImprovementsĀ manual looks at ways to protect traditional water sources. With the aim of maximising the use of local skills and avoiding the use of expensive equipment. Likewise it seeks to introduce some practicalities of source protection. For example the use of cement, minimum levels of safety, and ideas on the use of various materials.
Source improvement is most relevant to small communities and low (rural) populations. However it can also provide benefits in peri-urban areas if there is no contamination of the aquifer from latrines or other point sources of pollution.
This guide is particularly popular in areas where many households have their own wells and are reluctant to change to communal wells. Therefore small changes can be achieved quickly and cheaply with significant and long-lasting effect. The book has an accompanying facilitator’s manual on “Encouraging Change” which provides practical information on building the capacity of communities to identify and analyse their own problems and to select options that are most appropriate to their needs and resources.
